What’s the Difference Between Hoopers and Agility?

If you’ve ever watched a dog weave through poles, dart through tunnels and leap over jumps with enthusiasm and precision, you’ve likely witnessed the thrilling sport of dog agility. But have you heard of Canine Hoopers?

Canine Hoopers is a fast-growing dog sport that’s gaining popularity across the UK – and for good reason. While it shares the excitement and teamwork of agility, it offers a more accessible and inclusive approach for dogs and handlers of all ages and abilities. So, what exactly sets hoopers apart from traditional agility? Let’s break it down.

Hoopers vs Agility: What’s the Difference?
1. Obstacles

  • Agility features a range of physical challenges: jumps, A-frames, seesaws, tunnels and weave poles. These can require significant athleticism from both dog and handler.
  • Hoopers, on the other hand, uses low-impact obstacles like hoops, barrels, tunnels, chutes, tango mats and gates. There are no jumps or contact equipment, which makes it easier on the joints – especially for puppies and older dogs or those recovering from injury.

2. Handler Movement

  • In agility, handlers often run alongside their dogs to guide them through the course.

  • In hoopers, courses are designed to be handled at a distance using verbal cues and body language. This is ideal for handlers who may have limited mobility or prefer a less physically demanding sport.

3. Accessibility

  • Agility can be more physically intensive and may not be suitable for every dog or person.

  • Hoopers welcomes dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes and is particularly suitable for senior dogs, young dogs still developing physically, and dogs with mobility limitations.

4. Focus and Flow

  • Agility courses tend to be more complex and high-impact, with sharp turns and quick transitions.

  • Hoopers courses focus on flow, distance handling and clear communication. The emphasis is on smooth, sweeping lines that allow the dog to run freely without abrupt stops or turns.

So What are the Benefits of Hoopers?

✅ Joint-Friendly
Because there are no jumps or high-impact obstacles, hoopers is kinder on your dog’s joints. It’s a great choice for dogs with arthritis or those recovering from injury.

✅ Builds Communication
Hoopers enhances your dog’s ability to work at a distance and respond to subtle cues. It strengthens the bond between dog and handler through clear communication and trust.

✅ Fun for All
Whether you’re new to dog sports or an experienced handler looking for something different, hoopers is accessible and enjoyable. Handlers with limited mobility can participate fully without having to run the course.

✅ Mentally Stimulating
Hoopers challenges your dog mentally as well as physically. It encourages problem-solving and focus, which can help reduce boredom-related behaviours at home.
